How Do You Know If You Have Premature Ejaculation?

You think you have a problem but you are not certain about it. How do you know if you have premature ejaculation? Let’s take a look at a few ways of classifying this condition.

A Closer Look

So what is premature ejaculation? If you look up the word “premature” in a dictionary then you will see that it means when something happens before it is anticipated or desired.

Unlike other conditions, it doesn’t seem to be so simple. Take, for instance, having the flu. You either have it or you don’t. We can’t make such sweeping statements about premature ejaculation.

Let’s take a look at how the medical establishment defines it.

The Medical Definition Of PE

A medical diagnosis must be clear cut and specific. Therefore the medical establishment have sought to quantify this condition.

The first thing that is decide upon is an average time take to ejaculation (also called an “intravaginal ejaculation latency time” or IELT). If you are very far from the average, then you have this condition.

Then you could have varying definitions of what is extreme. Some doctors would argue at the 0.5% mark. Others say the 2.5% mark. This would mean if you ejaculate before 1 minute or 1.5 minutes (depending on your definition) then you have premature ejaculation.

In fact, the medical establishment still cannot agree on a quantitative definition for this condition. Maybe where they are going wrong is because they are trying to quantify it in the first place? I mean, does your condition suddenly disappear because you have a “good day” where you can last for 5 minutes?

Other Definitions

Some people also say that a normal sex life should have you reaching orgasm, on average, at the same time as your partner.

If she orgasms more quickly on average then you must be a stud! If you reach orgasm earlier more often than she does then you have premature ejaculation.

Whilst this is an interesting definition it is also perhaps idealistic. It totally ignores the fact that men and women are completely different in their sexual response which we have a lot of evidence and reports to suggest.

Are You Happy?

This is the only real definition for this condition. Are you happy about your performance? Do you feel that you need to last longer to really enjoy sex? If this is the case then you could say that you now know that you have premature ejaculation.

This is the only real measure. Take the example of a guy who ejaculates within a minute but is very happy with his performance. Would you say that he has premature ejaculation? In fact, many men in many cultures actually prefer to ejaculate quickly. And if you look to nature and our closest relatives, chimpanzees, you will see that they ejaculate within seconds as most animals also do.
